Development Overview

The site is located upon Bidston Hill, Wirral within a cluster of local heritage landmarks inclusive of the Grade II listed Bidston Lighthouse.

The Grade II listed building has been converted over a number of years from a observatory, weather station and oceanography/tidal research centre into its current use a Artist’s Research Centre with residential use which provides dedicated spaces to showcase the site’s history and scientific research.

The current single glazed windows are not suitable due to their negative impact on the building’s heat retention and in turn energy and heating consumption.

The building has no current ability to produce renewable energy on site so is reliant on increasingly costly and unsustainable sources.

The key issues are;

  • The building has a poor thermal performance
  • Conventional, power hungry, heating and boiler systems.
  • No alternative heating or power sources.
  • Excessive energy costs

The proposals are for the installation of secondary glazing, solar panels and an air source heat pump fitted alongside the existing gas boiler to create a dual system hot water solution, improving the energy efficiency of the building. The original flues/ fireplaces will also be reinstated to provide solid fuel heating.
