Development Overview

Located on the site of Ysgol Gogarth, a special needs school providing day and residential education in Llandudno, the Child Development Centre is a joint development between Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Conwy County Borough Council. Following the remodelling of a former school residential wing and the addition of a single storey extension, the new Centre provides specialist facilities for young children aged between 0-5 years with a range of disabilities and complex developmental difficulties.

Designed to be child friendly, with the new extension having large, low level windows allowing the children views out over the surrounding landscape, the new Centre provides a variety of educational, therapy, medical, nursing and ancillary office accommodation. More conventional medical and learning spaces are supplemented by specialist sensory and soft play areas designed to promote learning through play and sensory stimulation.

Colours, finishes, seating and lighting have all been chosen to create a ‘home from home’ atmosphere to help the children feel at ease within the building. A local artist was commissioned to design illuminated coloured art boxes which are located within the ceiling of the corridor spaces which are designed to provide visual stimulation for the children.
