Development Overview

Several completed projects have been undertaken with LJMU on several of their sites including their Fontenoy Street site in the city centre.

The completed Sports Science Building is sited adjacent to our original public realm scheme located on Fontenoy Square. The brief required a large extension to its existing department building to accommodate;

  • Three large open plan fitness suites
  • New glazed entrance and cafe
  • Changing and shower facilities
  • Office accommodation.

The proposal was creatively designed to replace an existing single storey building, which was demolished, to integrate within the busy city space and link to the existing retained departmental building. The site is located virtually under one of Liverpool’s city ‘flyovers’ and close to the Birkenhead tunnel entrance and exit. It was also important that the current building remained in use throughout the construction stages.

The large glazed façade allows increased interaction between the university buildings and the external public space, maximising the integration of the university within the city environment. The building provides a new social hub for the sports science department, and the new additional social areas create an open, welcoming entrance and gathering spaces for all users of the university department.

The brief was developed in partnership with the client and issues of buildability and site access were discussed during the early stages of the project. The health and safety of the students, staff and members of the public was fully incorporated within the construction proposals.
