Development Overview

Ysgol Y Plas is a voluntary aided Church-in-Wales Primary School located in the rural village of Llanelian just outside Colwyn Bay. Ainsley Gommon were appointed to remodel and extend the existing Victorian school building to cater for rising pupil numbers.

The original school building underwent a programme of refurbishment works to upgrade the existing facilities, providing more efficient teaching areas and helping to improve accessibility in and around the building. Phasing arrangements had to be carefully planned to allow the school to remain open during construction.

A new extension was provided incorporating a revised entrance, new teaching spaces, toilets and staff facilities. A feature roof light allows light deep into the building, whilst framing a view of existing school building’s slate roof and creating a visual link between old and new from within. A curved glass brick wall separates the entrance space and a practical area allowing natural light to flood through the building whilst providing an element of privacy.

The new extension was designed to sit comfortably with the original stone built Victorian school, using traditional Welsh materials including local stone walling and slate roofs combined with larch board cladding and aluminium windows helping to give the extension a more contemporary appearance.
