Development Overview
Ainsley Gommon was appointed by LJMU to design new accommodation for its highly rated Sports Science department with projects split over two campuses. We provided site evaluation and design guidance during the fast track process to ensure funding allocation.
The large busy I.M.Marsh Campus, part of LJMU, occupies an open site in Aigburth, on the outskirts of Liverpool. The brief was to provide a link between two existing sports buildings, a swimming pool with ancillary accommodation and a laboratory and teaching facilities. The new designed link improved means of access and facilities for both staff and students. Detailed consultation with the client team throughout the process ensured the full incorporation of their requirements within the design.
The two existing buildings sit in an elevated location offering views of the surrounding areas. The design resolves keys level changes, providing ramped access between two busy existing University buildings, with a new secure welcoming entrance linking the swimming pool, with Greenbank and Langton lecture rooms. The link building also accommodated a large ICT suite and office. Externally new landscaping provides screening to the swimming pool and a new terraced area for use by the staff and students.
The buildings remained in use throughout the construction process, and utilised a steel portal frame to speed up the construction programme. The works were carefully programmed to minimise disruption during the summer months.
