Development Overview

Refurbishment and re-ordering of an existing library building, originally built in 1962, and located on the main Civic Square in Ellesmere Port. A significant extension, now accommodating the main adult lending and reference library area was added to the building in 1972.

The existing library internally required significant improvements and re-ordering to accommodate new modern library technologies and improved public facilities. An initial Feasibility Study investigated the existing use of space and the services within the building, and presented proposed recommendations to provide improved facilities for the public and staff.

Works have included a new replacement external ramp and main entrance to meet the requirements of DDA, with a new internal layout leading the public into a re-ordered entrance space containing new automated book terminals and information points. Improved circulation throughout the building has created a perception of more space by opening up the interior and providing additional IT and reference facilities for the users of the library.

Many of the existing services within the library have been replaced, providing improved comfort within the offices and meeting rooms, and new re-ordered public toilets. A space previously intended for a library café, has been fitted out with new servery counter and existing partitions removed to fully open the café up to the main library space. New carpets and decoration has been carried out as part of the refurbishment. The library was completed and re-opened to the public in August 2011.
