Development Overview
Ainsley Gommon Architects were approached by Wrexham County Borough Council to undertake a feasibility study to investigate redevelopment options for Plas Madoc Leisure Centre on the outskirts of Wrexham. Although the once ‘state of the art’ leisure centre with its swimming pool wave machine had previously received a number of cosmetic improvements, the building still retained its original plant and the services were very inefficient, expensive to run and were reaching the end of their lifespan.
As well as looking at improving the sports facilities provided, the brief also required a new health centre to be considered as part of the development proposals. The feasibility options needed to be as environmentally friendly and financially feasible as possible along with the ultimate aim of making the final proposals low carbon.
Our proposed options varied from complete refurbishment of the existing building, hybrid options with partial refurbishment and areas of new build, to a complete new building. All
options proposed new plant and servicing, with various levels of remodelling within the existing shell of the building.
The study culminated with a detailed design proposal for a purpose built facility that included a six lane 25m Swimming Pool with adjacent Learner Pool, 4 court Sports Hall, Fitness Suite, Dance Studio and Health Centre.
