Development Overview
After completing a full redevelopment Masterplan for the 7.5 hectares of the Alway estate in Newport, Ainsley Gommon also produced the detailed design of two important community buildings which were key to the overall masterplan, a new local shopping centre and Police Station, and a Community Hall and Youth Centre for local people living in Alway. With the Masterplan taking the form of a ‘figure of eight’ which splits the development into an ‘Upper’ and ‘Lower’ site, a new urban square was designed to link the two main areas, around which the key community facilities have been located.
Providing much needed local amenities, the first community facility is a contemporary L-shaped building which was designed to allow natural surveillance of the the surrounding landscaped public realm and the new Multi-Use Games Area. The building was split into five individual units, providing a supermarket, pharmacy, police station, bookmakers and a takeaway.
The second building provided is a Community Centre which occupies a corner site at the primary gateway to the scheme. The building provides a range of community resources including a main hall, various meeting rooms, a kitchen, offices, reception and a games room and links to an outdoor Multi-Use Games area.
