Construction works have commenced at Bay View Rd housing scheme for Wales and West Housing Association, providing 54 new affordable apartment units in Colwyn Bay town centre, with good links to all of the town’s facilities.
The scheme will provide flexible, accessible and inclusive homes for residents who may wish to downsize from larger properties. The apartments have been designed to Welsh Government Development Quality Requirements and Lifetime Homes Standards for future adaptability.
A mix of 43no. one-bedroom apartments and 8no.two bedroom apartments are provided and include 3no. wheelchair accessible apartments on the lower ground floor. Shared communal facilities including seating areas and an external courtyard garden and electric scooter store will encourage independence and greater mobility.
The design has been developed to respond to the site levels and reflect the scale and massing of the traditional Victorian villas adjacent. This area of Colwyn Bay town centre has a distinct local character and appearance with properties that are mainly red brick or render. The new residential development will be contemporary in appearance whilst being sympathetic to the existing local character, with the external built form of the building has been designed with traditional pitched domestic scale roofs, gables and dormers, and bay windows reflecting the rhythm and style of the locality.
A communal courtyard garden is provided to the West of the site, accessed from a shared lounge and waiting area, creating a hub for socialising and ensuring there is adequate outdoor space for the residents to enjoy. The courtyard garden will be planted and seating areas will be provided. In addition, a communal terrace is provided on the third floor, as well as a number of apartments on the upper ground, first and third floors benefitting from private balconies.
The scheme is being built by Castlemead Group. The 5-storey building timber frame structure will be finished with brick, cladding and standing seam metal. Due for completion in 2026.
