Development Overview
Ainsley Gommon was initially appointed to carry out a feasibility masterplanning exercise for a former oleochemical site. The industry was historically sited to benefit from the proximity of the Mersey and the Dibbin Estuary. Part of site falls into the flood risk zone affected by both fluvial and tidal flooding.
We worked with Cascade to obtain reserved matters approval for the extensive river restoration works undertaken to mitigate flood risk to the site and to re-establish part of the river as a wetland environment. This encompassed rerouting a section of the river to improve flow, combined with remodelling the riverbank to better facilitate tidal flows and to form a natural self seeded wet land area to encourage wildlife.
The proposals first established through the masterplan include opening up access to the riverbank for the first time in its history, as a combined public riverside walk, foot and cycle path. This allows for future connections between Bromborough Pool, the new Public Open Space adjacent to the listed clock tower (also designed as part of the masterplan), the Land Trust owned Scheduled Ancient Monument site and the newly completed Port Sunlight River Park.
The new resurfaced 760m riverside walk pathway utilises the existing site features where possible, such as the existing stone seawall and the original cast iron mooring bollards, hinting at it’s rich history. The environmental sustainability of the new interventions have been carefully considered, and include low level solar powered LED lighting and a new locally sourced recycled secure handrail, running along the length of the river edge.
