Development Overview

Located within the Flintshire village of Gwernaffield, this affordable housing project provides five new family homes for local people. The development makes use of an infill plot of land within the heart of the village and provides two sets of semi-detached three bedroom homes and one larger detached four bedroom property.

Taking inspiration from the surrounding area, the homes were designed to reflect the local village vernacular. Materials were carefully chosen and the render and limestone finishes are sympathetic to the building traditions of the locale. Details such as the render window surrounds, stone cills and front porches all help to create a modern, attractive development.

The landscaping design works around the existing trees on site, with new trees and low level planting helping to soften the development. Accessed via a private drive, each of the houses has off-road parking for two cars and a generous front and rear garden. Limestone entrance walls help to create a cohesive overall appearance and announce the entrance to the development.

The homes have roof mounted photovoltaic panels and are Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 rated. Built by local contractor’s Lovell, the project was completed in March 2012 for Pennaf Housing Group. The project received an LABC Building Excellence Award for Best Social / Affordable Housing Development in North Wales in 2012.
